IRISH TRADITIONAL MUSIC
Growing up in a tiny village in the midst of a musical family, Anthony Kearns's exposure to Irish traditional music was standard fare. At age four he was picking out Irish traditional melodies on his mother's button accordion, and by age six he was hooked on singing those and other songs! A natural performer, Anthony spent his boyhood years performing in local shows, school musicals, masses and Irish traditional music societies, one of which was Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Eireann (CCE), an organization that promotes Irish traditional music in all its forms. Betty Kearns, Anthony's mother, remains a very active member of this organization, which has chapters throughout the world.

In the spring of 2002 Anthony and Betty Kearns approached the Music Fund about providing financial assistance to programs and students of Irish traditional music. On September 25, 2002, feeling that providing this funding would be an appropriate expenditure of monies, the Music Fund announced that it would include Irish traditional music in "Broader Horizons", the Music Fund's expanded gifting program.
Today, as a professional singer, Anthony's repertoire covers a wide range of musical genres, but hardly a performance goes by that he doesn't remind us of his Irish traditional music background.
Anthony is thrilled that the Music Fund has embraced Irish traditional music as it represents a meaningful gesture of "giving back" by Anthony to his musical beginnings.
